MLS2MIS Converter
A bridge between two eras of Church technology
What Was MLS2MIS?
MLS2MIS was a data conversion utility that converted membership data from the newer Java-based MLS (Member and Leader Services) format back to the legacy DOS-based MIS (Membership Information System) format. It helped bridge the gap during a critical transition period in Church technology.
The Evolution of Church Data Systems
MIS: The DOS Era (1980s-1990s)
Membership Information System (MIS) was a DOS-based software package that ran on early personal computers. Ward and stake clerks would:
- Install MIS on desktop computers running MS-DOS or early Windows
- Navigate green-screen text interfaces with keyboard commands
- Manage membership records, tithing, and calling information
- Print reports on dot-matrix printers
- Exchange data via floppy disks mailed to Church headquarters
It was revolutionary for its time, bringing digital organization to ward administration.
MLS: The Java Revolution (2000s)
Member and Leader Services (MLS) represented a major technological leap forward:
- Built with Java for cross-platform compatibility (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Modern graphical user interface with mouse support
- More robust data management and reporting capabilities
- Better security and data synchronization
- Support for newer Windows operating systems
The Challenge: During the transition, some wards and stakes still needed MIS-format data for legacy workflows, third-party tools, or situations where MLS couldn't yet be deployed. That's where MLS2MIS came in.
LCR & Ward Tools: The Modern Web Era (2010s-Present)
Leader and Clerk Resources (LCR) and Ward Tools brought Church administration into the cloud age:
- Web-based platforms accessible from any browser
- Native mobile apps for iOS and Android
- Real-time synchronization across devices
- Integrated with ChurchofJesusChrist.org accounts
- Automatic updates—no software installation required
- Secure, encrypted access to membership and financial data
- Streamlined ministering assignments and reporting
Today's leaders can access ward information instantly from their phones, anywhere in the world.
We've Come a Long Way
From floppy disks and DOS commands to cloud-based mobile apps, the evolution of Church technology mirrors the broader digital transformation of society. Each generation of tools—MIS, MLS, LCR, and Ward Tools—has made it easier for leaders to focus on what truly matters: ministering to people.

MLS2MIS was designed during a transition period when data security standards were different. Today's Church systems use industry-leading encryption and security practices. If you have old MIS or MLS data files, they should be securely disposed of according to Church guidelines for handling sensitive membership information.
